Our flagship campus will be located in Saigon Hi-Tech Park, in Ho Chi Minh City (District 9). Until phase 1 of campus construction is completed in Summer 2021, we are located at Crescent Plaza, Tan Phu, in Ho Chi Minh City (District 7).
We are seeking Vietnamese and international applicants who have held leadership roles as undergraduates and/or invested themselves in their own university communities for the Residence Advisor (“RA”) position from recent college graduates. The RAs support students’ personal growth through structured and intentional learning opportunities, foster intercultural community building in the residences, and cultivate relationships across campus through community involvement and program development. The position will report to the Director of Student Life.
Scope of Work
RAs are guides, mentors, and advisors for the Fulbright student body. RAs will live in the same apartment as the students and serve as a role model for students while contributing to the development of the University’s programs and initiatives. The role aims to create a community-centric environment in the residence, as well as on campus. The RA position requires a high level of responsibility and flexibility; RAs should expect to have evening, weekend and holiday commitments when students are in residence. The RA position is more than just a friendly presence in the residence; they play a crucial role in building a healthy, inclusive environment in which students develop independence and learn to live cooperatively with others.
Roles and Responsibilities
Residence Advisors are responsible for the following:
• Full-time residence in the residence of Fulbright
• Provide intentional programmatic and tailored support for students
• Assist students in their adjustment to roommate and community living
• Design and implement programs and activities designed/organized to meet the social, educational, and personal development needs of students
• Organize regular apartment meetings, as well as maintain meaningful interactions with students and actively encourage community involvement within the residences and across campus
• Serve as a referral agent to other campus resources such as the wellness counseling center, the student learning support center
• Participate in the on-call duty rotation schedule and act as a first response to students in cases of emergency. While each RA will have designated on-call duty nights, staff are expected to assist whenever possible
• Assist with University-wide programs and events throughout the year
• Attend regular team meetings with other RAs, Residence Life Coordinators (“RLCs”) and Student Life staff
• Assist with administrative duties as assigned, including, but not limited to reports, department paperwork, check-ins and check-outs of residents, support maintenance team
• Participate in staff training and professional development sessions held prior to the beginning of the academic year and throughout the year when required. This include, but are not limited to first aid, mental health first aid, emergency response, development of crisis-handling skills, development of professional speaking and writing.
• Work closely with RLCs to embrace new and different work requirements, explore new opportunities to enhance the residence life experience.
Other Involvement: Associate Position
• In addition to the RA position, professional RAs may hold an associate position in various offices across campus. The Associate Position is optional, and is typically 8 – 16 hours to be determined on a case-to-case basis. It intends to offer RAs the opportunity to pursue their professional and intellectual interests in such a way that contributes to the broader work of Fulbright.
• Student Life will fully support RAs in finding Associate Positions within Fulbright University.
• RA should discuss the possibility of an associate position with the Director of Student Life and the HR team prior to starting their contract. The RA will need explicit approval from the Director of Student Life before starting their associate position.
* Associate roles can include research assistance, academic projects, wellness, intercultural engagement, residential life, admissions, communications and outreach.
* RAs may not assume any associate position or role of service that may prevent them to be adequately available to students and perform RA duties.
• Bachelor’s degree in any field
• Recent college graduate with 0-3 years of professional experience.
• Prior experience with student life and residential life (i.e. Residence Assistant, Freshmen Counselor, Hall Council, experience in student clubs, committees, etc.) Being familiar with wellness/health/clinical techniques is a big advantage
• Demonstrated leadership experience and an ability to mentor/advise students
• Prior international experience is very helpful, or exposure to multicultural work environments
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Proficiency in English languages skills (speaking, writing, listening and reading)
• A strong interest in the liberal arts and sciences
• Eagerness to engage and establish rapport with a diverse community across different nationalities, cultures, religions, ethnicities, and beliefs
• Creative and flexible thinker who brings a proactive approach to problem-solving
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet expected deadlines and effectively complete assigned tasks
• Ability to communicate well in group and individual situations
• Knowledge and interest in working in a college environment is preferable
What we offer
Subject to the successful candidate’s availability, RAs can work as short-term interns or full-time employees of a definite term contract. Each RA receives competitive compensation (if eligible), shared housing in a furnished suite with students, use of University facilities, and a comprehensive health insurance plan. RAs are also eligible for a phone allowance.
